Plan to attend the 5th Annual Excavation Safety Summit sponsored by Common Ground Nebraska (CGN). This FREE educational event brings stakeholders in excavation safety together to support the common goal of damage prevention and safe digging. A variety of breakout sessions led by industry experts will be offered throughout the day as well as educational booths displaying industry products and services. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at the Lancaster Event Center in Lincoln, NE.

Session 1 (CHOOSE ONE):

1. Live Line Hit Simulation – From Locate Request to Damage Investigation

Ron Peterson – Baker-Peterson, LLC

    • Damaged utilities cause injuries, equipment damage, shutdowns and massive financial loss. There are many opportunities for the process to breakdown and result in a damaged line. In this interactive session, we’ll simulate common scenarios throughout the one call process to illustrate how to avoid pitfalls. Ron Peterson, a well known damage investigation expert will demonstrate why proper investigation is important.

2. Construction Risk Areas and Loss Control

Larry Kruse – Consortio Group

    • In this session, an expert loss control consultant discusses safety analysis and plans that help control the Focus 4 risk areas in construction projects. He will also address OSHA excavation safety information and how to effectively manage a safety program to improve an Experience Modifier Rating.

3. Power for Safe Performance - How to improve your stress response to perform your job safely

Angie Siebert – OPPD

    • This presentation is designed to offer attendees the opportunity to examine their current stress recovery tools and determine what, if any, adjustments they might make to improve their ability to work safely. We'll discuss whole person well-being in relationship to stress recovery and showing up able to perform our work and do it safely.

Session 2 (CHOOSE ONE):

1. Locator 101

Travis Beran – Subsurface Solutions

    • This highly interactive and hands-on session is provided by a field locating expert. Content includes an examination of the theory, fundamentals and technology used to locate underground facilities. Bring your own locating equipment if you'd like.

2. YTEFAS - Essential Jobsite Safety

David Miguel – Underground Safety & Supply

    • YTEFAS is safety spelled backwards. Sometimes we get safety backwards or view it as a negative that inhibits freedom and production. This presentation will highlight the fact that safety is the one thing that protects employees, their freedom and their ability to produce. Tragic examples from job sites will be discussed to illustrate the "ytefas" point.

3. Safety in the Trenches

John Schnepel – United Rentals

    • This class will focus on the best practices that have been developed for trenching and shoring safety. The speaker will communicate clear requirements that have been developed in order to provide a safe working environment at the job site for excavating personnel.

Session 3 (CHOOSE ONE):

1. It’s Just a Couple of Beers - Understanding Intoxication/Impairment in the work environment

Jason Sharp – Law Enforcement Training Institute; Joe Chavis – National Safety Council, Nebraska

    • You might be surprised to learn that many equipment operators are running machines and vehicles while under the influence of illicit drugs or alcohol. Whether it's a couple of beers or a few too many, this course will demonstrate how judgment is impaired with every drink. Attendees will have an opportunity to see firsthand, how impairment affects safety and performance through the use of simulation devices.

2. Drill Baby Drill! How to use hydro-excavation to prevent damages when directional drilling.

Craig Galle – Badger Daylighting; Mitch Schwartzendruber -Ditch Witch, Jesse Jacobs – J-Spot Services, Steve Bunda- Vermeer

    • This hands-on demonstration will focus on how to successfully install new utility lines without damaging existing infrastructure. The course will feature a LIVE demonstration on how to safely “pot hole” existing infrastructure prior to drilling. Two different pieces of hydrovac equipment will be used to safely expose utility lines. The course will also feature a LIVE directional drilling demonstration and how to safely install pipelines once existing infrastructure has been exposed

3. Call Center Update featuring the new ITIC Mobile!

Tyler Nesheim – One Call Concepts

    • The Call Center is continually updating their technology to make the One Call process more efficient for everyone. In this session, information regarding recent updates to the technology and processes used by the call center will be discussed along with the new ITIC mobile and frequently asked questions.
